When you’d imagine somebody crashing their Mercedes-Benz at the Nurburgring, you’d probably be thinking about something like an AMG GT or at least something with ‘AMG’ in its name.
Not this time though. What you’re looking at here is a Mercedes-Benz D200 (W123), built between 1976 and 1985.
It’s the so-called predecessor to the E-Class (W124) and probably one of the least likeliest cars to get in trouble on a race track, especially as a D200 diesel-powered model, which used to make around 60 PS (44 kW) back in the late 70s. While there were a lot of great things about this car back when it first came out, neither of them included any type of track-worthy agility and steering feel.
From what we can tell, after applying opposite lock during the initial slide, the driver didn’t really have time to counteract the secondary slide – that or he was simply caught by surprise and didn’t know what to do.
The car did end up in the wall, but damage was probably minimal as the impact itself wasn’t particularly forceful.
Sad to see any classic Merc get hurt though.
