If you’re fortunate enough to have secured a spot on the order list for the new Ford GT, you’re going to have some choices to make. And the brake calipers are only the smallest of them.
For the first time, Ford is offering a choice of finishes for the calipers gripping the GT’s carbon-ceramic rotors. They’ll come standard in anodized black, but buyers will also be able to option silver, blue, orange or red brake calipers instead.
That’s just the tip of the old iceberg, though. There will be eight exterior colors available, plus a choice of racing stripes and interior accents. Though the driver’s side of the dashboard is kept largely free of distraction, the passenger-side fascia and seat trim can be ordered in accent colors as well.
With eight exterior colors, seven stripes (or none at all), five wheels, five calipers, four interior color packages, we’re already looking at 5,600 different combinations. And that’s before we get into special editions like the ’66 Heritage. With Ford only to make 250 examples each year, it would take over 22 years of production for any two would have to be made in the same configuration.
That is, of course, assuming that every customer orders his or hers different from every other. And at the end of the day, certain combinations are bound to be more popular than others. We hope, for example, that yellow with orange stripes and red calipers wouldn’t see too many takers.
