The challenging Race to the Clouds was no match for a slightly modified Tesla Model S P90D, which managed to break the old electric car record by a full minute.
Initially, the Model S was believed to carry heavy updates over the standard model, but it turns out that it remained mostly stock, except for the removed airbags and stripped out interior, which was equipped with a bolt-in roll cage.
Go Puck’s CEO Blake Fuller, and his team, was responsible for the modifications, which helped this Tesla Model S drop approximately 800 pounds (~360 kg) from its total weight.
Combined with an unorthodox method for cooling the batteries, which involved a lot of ice, the zero-emission car was driven up the 12.42-mile (20 km) long hill climb, through its 156 turns, by Blake Fuller, in 11:48.264, thus setting a new record for a production electric vehicle, which was previously held by a motorcycle, at 13 minutes.
This is the first time that a Tesla Model S was prepared for a competition run and it comes two years after a Tesla Roadster participated in the same event, which marks its 100th birthday in 2016.
Congratulations to Blake Fuller #GOPUCK !! Broke the previous #electric production record 11:48. Good times 🙂 pic.twitter.com/3CMEeZoGlE
