The DeLorean DMC-12 had its drawbacks and quirks, with the Texas-based “DeLorean Motor Company” attempting to correct them with an upcoming, revised model in 2017. But for the hopeless romantic, there’s always the second hand market.

When the DMC-12 premiered in 1981 it was unlike anything on the market. The Giorgetto Giugiaro designed automobile had gullwing doors, a rear-mounted engine and an unpainted stainless-steel body. Okay, the Back to the Future trilogy may have contributed to the vehicle’s recognition, but there’s a reason why the producers though the car was suited for a time machine.

If you’re not one of clients willing to pay “less than $100,000” for one of the ~300 updated DMC-12s (which will be powered by a more powerful engine, by the way), you can always opt for a somewhat original one, and this particular example is as good as it gets.

Owned now by Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire and /DRIVE, the car was sold new in early 1984 and driven 2,450 miles (3943 km) before being parked in a Los Angeles storage unit for 28 years. According to Bring A Trailer, when Farah purchased it 4 years ago, he performed an extensive mechanical refresh, rebuilding the engine, adopting new wiring system, and implementing a DMC “Fix Everything” kit (a collection of over 40 items prone to failure that have been upgraded based on DMC’s knowledge of the car).

The 2.8-litre V6 was also upgraded to 200 HP and 200 lb/ft (271 Nm) of torque, receiving a DMC Stage II Performance package and new suspension kit. Since the upgrades, the car registered less than 2,000 miles (3219 km) on the clock, and it comes with a good history file.

If you hurry, the car can be yours for $32,000.
