Ever since Volvo took the wraps off the new S90 sedan and V90 wagon, we’ve been eagerly waiting to see what the Polestar division would do with them. We never thought they’d pack anywhere near 600 horsepower, but according to Motor Trend, that’s precisely what the Swedish automaker has in store.
That output figure would be impressive no matter how big the engine, but is even more so when you consider that it’s slated to come from the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s already powering a variety of Volvo models. It already produces 400 horsepower in top T8 spec with the hybrid help of an electric motor, but for the Polestar version is slated to bump output by another 50 percent.
To get there, the internal combustion side of the equation will have to up its game to around 450 horsepower on its own, with the extra 150 coming in the form of electric assist – replacing the 87-horsepower motor in the current T8.
For comparison’s sake, that would put the S90 and V90 Polestar in league with the latest Audi RS6 Performance and out ahead of the BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG E63, and Jaguar XFR-S. Newer, more powerful versions of some of those models are on their way, but where they’re expected to stick with V8 power, the Polestar models will impress even more by getting that much juice out of such a tiny package.
