The Texan tuning house released the back story of their new world record, revealing that the Venom GT Spyder had a fuel pump malfunction during the record run.

Just because they’ve shattered Bugatti’s speed record for convertible cars doesn’t mean it all was smooth sailing for John Hennessey and his team.

One of the three fuel pumps of the Venom GT Spyder decided to stop working after the first try, leaving the car unable to accelerate past the 250mph mark. The team eventually got the car running just on the remaining two fuel pumps, meaning that power was down 300hp from its original 1,451hp output.

Despite the malfunction though, the Hennessey Venom GT managed not only to become the world’s fastest convertible with a top speed of 265.6mph (427.4km/h) but did so by beating the previous record set by Bugatti by almost 12mph more.

The world’s fastest convertible broke the speed record running low on power? Now that’s a cool story to share.
