Porsche says that around 70% of all its vehicles ever built are still around today, in drive-able condition. So, to satisfy the need for spare parts and, most importantly, genuine-looking rubber, the company has developed a series of specific-tuned tires to suit a wide array of classic Porsches.
Those familiar with car restoration know that getting the right set of tires on a classic vehicle could be a real nuisance, mainly because few manufacturers offer obsolete dimensions and the majority of car restorers have to commission costly bespoke sets.
Well, not anymore, as Porsche now offers 32 new tire recommendations – ranging from model years 1959 through 2005, from the 356 B to the 996 – with each end every one matching the historic originals in terms of looks, profile and design.
The new ones are not just reissues of the historic models, but rather combine the original looks with the driving properties of modern tires. To put it simply, the material composition of the tires has additives used in today’s rubber technology, combining excellent grip with comfort – making the cars exhibit much more balanced driving proprieties.
Want more? How about we told you the tires were developed with the help of Pirelli and Walter Röhrl? Since each tire type was subtly tuned to suit a respective model, Porsche testers worked closely with the former world champion, who offered tips on the driving properties.
“The driving properties in the early years were not as full or balanced as they are today. The new generation of tires is more fitting than ever to the driving style of a challenging sports car”, Röhrl commented.
So, there you go; there’s no excuse not to get a classic Porsche if tires were stopping you from buying one in the first place.
