The big news at the moment is the production version of the VisionS large SUV that’s due in September, but Skoda has even bigger plans.
Namely, an all-electric vehicle scheduled for 2020/2021 that will use the VW Group’s MEB battery-electric platform, as Autocar reports, and benefit from new battery technology which targets a range of 300+ miles (480+ km) and a charging time of 15 minutes.
“The group is working on a modular, new electric platform and we are in the team. There is no alternative to electrification. We have to tackle it“, said Skoda chairman Bernhard Maier.
Batteries will be packed in the floor and this will create extra space in the cabin, enough for a third row of seats. The vehicle will actually be the second addition to a new range of electrified powertrains developed as a response to the emissions scandal, as the first one is expected to be a PHEV Superb that’s coming in 2019.
Sharing the MEB architecture with the Skoda EV will be a new Volkswagen hybrid, which should use a 1.4-liter turbo four-pot and an electric motor to go heat-to-head with the Toyota Prius.
