Work on Audi’s next generation TT RS high-performance coupe continues under the (dis)guise of the TT S body, but for the first time, we get a peek inside a tester confirm a manual gearbox.

The six-speed stick shift will be offered alongside an optional dual-clutch automatic transmission, both connected to Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system as standard.

What these pictures don’t tell us is whether the new TT RS will get its mojo from an updated version of the RS3’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo, as most sources claim, or as others say, the VW Group’s brand-new 2.0-liter four-cylinder previewed on the 414hp (420PS)2014 TT Quattro Sport Concept and set to power the VW Golf R400.

Either way, the top dog in the TT’s range will push close to 400 horses, while potential weight savings in its construction, could make it a tad lighter than the 306hp (310PS) TT S helping it complete the 100km/h (62mph) sprint in less than four seconds.

A revised chassis with upgraded suspension bits, steering system, drilled brakes and electronic aides will make sure that those extra ponies remain in check.

The only exterior giveaways on this prototype are the signature RS model oval pipes resting on the corners of the modified rear diffuser and the bigger brakes with drilled rotors, but in production trim, the TT RS will get a bespoke aero package with a fixed rear wing together with larger wheels. It will also gain some unique touches inside on the dashboard and the seats.

We’ll see the new TT RS revealing itself later this year.
