Just as Mercedes-Benz released the first official (interior) shots of their new-gen E-Class sedan, our spies caught a prototype of the Coupe version in Germany.
So, does it look like a bigger C-Class Coupe or a smaller S-Class Coupe? Well, that’s kind of a trick question since the compact model closely mimics the design of the latest S-Class Coupe, but if we had to choose, we’d go with the former as it has a more bulbous design than the latter.
That said, and even though this tester is clad in camouflage, there’s no hiding the fact that the E-Class Coupe carries the same styling cues, so much so, that we wouldn’t blame you for thinking it’s a leftover C-Class Coupe prototype. We had a hard time ourselves trying to make sure that it was indeed an E-Class Coupe, with the most visible evidence coming from the LED headlamp and taillight graphics.
Just like the two-door C-Class, the E-Class Coupe has a sloping roofline with a pillar-less design for the side windows and a steeply raked windscreen at the back – don’t pay attention to the ‘Bangle 6-Series’ style rear, as that’s just a mock boot to mislead us.
The interior, aside from the typical in this class, four (individual) seat layout, will be based off the E-Class sedan, so expect a similar, if not identical appearance for the dashboard, including the availability of the wide, twin-screen instrument cluster.
Powertrains will be shared with the sedan and will include a range of four, six and eight cylinder units, headed by a reworked version of AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 pushing out some 600-horses in the E63.
The first new E-Class model to be presented will be the sedan at the Detroit Motor Show in January, followed by the Estate in mid-2016, the Coupe in early 2017, and finally, a convertible body style towards the end of 2017.
