Volvo says that 25 per cent of the plastics used in its vehicles from 2025 will come from recycled materials.

In announcing the plan, the Swedish automaker unveiled a one-off XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid.

Inside, the special Volvo XC60 includes a transmission tunnel made from renewable fibers and plastics sourced from discarded fishing nets and maritime ropes. Additionally, the carpet features fibers from PET plastic bottles and recycled cotton mix that comes from the offcuts of clothing manufacturers. PET fibers are also featured in the seats and used car seats from old Volvo cars were implemented under the hood as special sound-absorbing material.

“Volvo Cars is committed to minimizing its global environmental footprint,” president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, said.

Senior vice president of Global Procurement, Martina Buchhauser, called on other manufacturers to follow Volvo’s lead.

“We already work with some great, forward-thinking suppliers when it comes to sustainability.

“However, we do need increased availability of recycled plastics if we are to make our ambition a reality. That is why we call on even more suppliers and new partners to join us in investing in recycled plastics and to help us realize our ambition.”

Beyond its commitment to using recycled plastics, Volvo aims to have climate-neutral manufacturing operations by 2025.
