Since what you’re about to see in this video would never ever happen in real life, we’ll go along with it and try to make sense of what’s going on so that we can collectively shake our heads.
About a month ago, Opel lined up a whole bunch of luxury saloons (plus a Volvo S80) and had the all-new Astra jump over them as if to deliver a strong message to the likes of Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Jaguar. Well, here’s one way to interpret that message: It’s not upsetting premium car manufacturers, it’s annoying them.
To make matters worse, this ad shows an older gentlemen in the back of a luxury saloon having his driver stop so that he can admire the Astra. He even goes on to mention the Matrix LED lights, Opel OnStar system and massage seats – easy to figure out, even though the commercial is in German.
As nice as those features can be on a compact car, there’s no way a premium saloon owner would ever feel envious or threatened in any way by something like that.
It’s only natural for models like the Astra, Golf, Focus and so on to keep adding new tech inside as time goes by – though they’ll never truly catch up to the premium brands in terms of how soon the tech can be made available.
As for the the gesture at the end, it’s pretty comical – though some might find it offensive.
Speaking of which, some of these premium manufacturers really should be offended since they’re the ones spending a fortune on R&D in order to be ahead of the curve with their top of the line saloons, only to have Opel come along and mock them.
