As this year marks the 80th anniversary of the UK driving test, Vauxhall has appointed their all-new Corsa to help cure learner drivers’ parallel parking woes.
Car buying experts Zuto recently conducted a research revealing that the reverse parallel park is the most feared maneuver on test day, more so than reversing around a corner and hill starts. With that in mind, Vauxhall partnered up with RED Driving School and created a short video proving that the student can indeed become the teacher.
The 180-degree handbrake parking maneuver is always cool to see, but what made it funny was the fact that the Corsa can use its Advanced Park Assist feature so that you no longer need to trouble yourself with how you parallel park your car – not that we don’t appreciate a flair for the dramatic.
Ian McIntosh, Chief Executive of RED Driving School, said “While the parallel park can be one of the more challenging elements of the driving test, it’s vital learners are confident with it – both in the test and when they take to the roads themselves. The video we’ve made with Vauxhall is designed to be humorous and look at something which is perceived as quite scary and difficult in a funny way, but there’s a very real message there too – parallel parking is an important skill.”
That’s really hard to argue with. Regardless of how clever your car is, you should always know how to fully execute every single move in the book when it comes to parking. Even if we’re talking about an autonomous car, there’s no reason why we should abandon developing our driving/parking skills simply because we would expect the car to handle most of the traffic we’ll encounter.
As for the Corsa’s Park Assist system, you can purchase it as a £495 optional extra in the UK, which will also include the Side Blind Spot Alert system.
