How one abandons their vehicle at an airport parking lot is beyond us, yet it happens far more often than you would think.

About one to two newly abandoned vehicles are checked in every month at the Boston Logan Airport’s garages and parking lots. Right now, there are 95 unclaimed cars in storage, some dating back from 2009 (!), and which the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) plans to auction off next week.

While you’ll surely find many clunkers, we were surprised to learn from the Boston Herald that the preliminary list of cars heading to the block range from a 1991 Isuzu Trooper to a…2009 BMW 3-Series sedan! Other notable cars in the list include a recent-generation Mini Cooper, a 2005 Jeep, a mid-to-late 2000s Mazda 6 together with a few Mercedes-Benz and Ford Explorer SUVs.

It’s anyone’s guess why these owners never collected their rides – but it could be anything from people who never came back to Boston to sneaky insurance scams. “If we did (know), we’d have a crystal ball,” aviation business general manager Sal Amico told the newspaper.

All 95 cars will be auctioned off “as is” without keys, but buyers will get a clean bill of sale to register their vehicles, according to Mike DeAngelis, Massport’s transportation business manager.

The auction will take place on October 17 (weather permitting) at 10 AM EST, with potential buyers having the chance to get a quick look at the cars two hours before it starts, and winners will have to pay in cash.
