Some might argue that Porsche has turned away from its “core values” by implementing a multitude of modern, “user-friendly” technologies for its cars, but we’re not so sure about that.
Yes, the “mundane” Carrera is now powered by a turbocharged flat six, the GT3 only comes with a PDK and Porsche’s choice of electrically assisting the 991’s power steering annoyed the purists, but these things won’t make Porsche any less competent at building lean, mean road-machines.
As a matter of fact, by adopting new approaches in technology and design, Porsche will probably construct even more awesome automobiles. But as always, there’s no point in displeasing the customers, and it seems that the German car manufacturer is allegedly cooking something for its diehard aficionados.
No, it won’t be an air-cooled flat six 911, but it will be a manual GT3-like model. According to Vierenzestig, Porsche plans to construct a limited-edition, retro-inspired 911, fueled by the 3.8-litre GT3 or the 4.0-litre GT3 RS sixes.
Allegedly named the 911 R, the car will be recognizable by the absence of flashy, in-your-face spoilers and racing style cues. Of course, the 911 R moniker is a throwback to the original, lightweight 901 911 R and its racing heritage, and it’s supposed to celebrate its ancestor 50th anniversary.
The model will reportedly be unveiled next June as a 2017 model year, and it will be made in an exclusive, limited run between 600 and 800 copies. We would usually recommend saving some cash by now, but the Porsche fan-site states that the model is already sold-out. So, yeah; tough luck – but the Cayman GT4 is still available, and that one can be ordered with a manual transmission too.
