Ford used to make some serious muscle cars in Australia. But like Holden, those days are behind it, with local production phased out, and the FPV Falcon gone with it.

Nowadays the Blue Oval’s left to import its muscle cars from America. Like the new Bullitt Mustang, which it’ll offer Down Under… but it comes at a price.

A price of $73,688, to be precise. Which is a whole lot of cash, no matter whose dollars you’re counting. That price is in Australian dollars, though, and works out to just over $54,350 at current exchange rates in equivalent American greenbacks. And that, mates, represents a $7,755 premium over what Ford charges for the special-edition pony car back in the USA – or nearly 11,000 Australian dollars more than a Mustang GT fastback.

For all that scratch, buyers get a thoroughly upgraded Mustang. It packs a 5.0-liter V8 sending 462 horsepower (345 kW) and 410 lb-ft (556 Nm) of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual. That’s a bit less than the 480 hp and 420 lb-ft that the Bullitt Mustang offers in America. In fact, it’s closer to the US-market Mustang GT, but it’s more than the export GT, and enough to make it “the most potent Mustang ever offered in Australia.”

It also comes with the MagneRide suspension, variable exhaust, a host of driver-assistance systems, and more, including that Dark Highland Green paintjob, gloss-black 19-inch wheels, red Brembo brake calipers and a smattering of special badges.

Ford Australia will import 700 examples, each individually numbered for the local market where the Mustang will start competing next year in the Supercars championship. According to the manufacturer, the Mustang has been the top-selling sports car in Australia the past two years running, and the best-selling in the world for the past three.
