Compared to its predecessors, the current Mercedes AMG GT is a bit shy when it comes to muscle flexing.

Sure, its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 doesn’t fall short on grunt and AMG’s expertise made it into a highly competitive automobile, but it doesn’t punch above its weight, even though it’s Mercedes’ top-notch sports car at the moment. In fact, compared to the SLS AMG – which took on the big boys – the AMG GT settled as a Porsche 911-fighter.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but in this day and age, when car manufacturers showcase their state-of-the-art technologies, skill and knowledge with extravagant supercars or even “hypercars”, Mercedes is missing out.

So, instead of yearning for the good old days when a SLR McLaren 722 was considered supercar royalty and could outperform a Lamborghini SV, Mercedes is allegedly working on a new “halo car”. Or at least that’s what Autoblog reports after speaking with a Mercedes-AMG product planner in Austria.

The car will allegedly be positioned above the AMG GT and will be powered by a new V12 powerplant, aided by an electric motor and battery pack – a setup that could make it one of the greatest, fastest Mercs ever.

As for the AMG GT? Well, apparently the baby SLS will continue to expand its line-up in the near future.
