Following the reveal of the facelifted Lexus LX 570 last week, Toyota has lifted the veils off its less luxurious sibling, the Land Cruiser 200.

Launched today in Japan, the facelifted Land Cruiser 200 features both styling and equipment updates. The most striking design upgrade is a new three-bar grille which extends horizontally across the LED headlights. The muscular appearance is also emphasized by the hood’s hollowed out center section.

At the rear, the license garnish extends across the redesigned taillights, making the car look wider. The facelifted Land Cruiser 200 also gets two new exterior colors, Copper Brown Mica and Dark Blue Mica.

Inside, the refreshed SUV gets a reorganized center console, which features switches and displays grouped by function. A new 4.2-inch TFT color LCD screen has been added, as well as six LED-backlit meters. The cabin now has four colors available to choose from, including a new brown hue. The seat covers use genuine semi aniline leather and the ceiling is now available in black as well.

The facelifted Land Cruiser 200 is the first model to introduce the automaker’s flagship active safety package, Toyota Safety Sense P, to the Japanese market. Offered as standard on all grades, Toyota Safety Sense P is a higher-spec version of the Toyota Safety Sense C package, which debuted earlier this year on Corolla models in Japan.

The active safety package includes Pre-collision System with pedestrian detection, Radar Cruise Control (with brake control), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Tire Pressure Warning System. In addition, Toyota offers a panoramic multi-terrain monitor which helps assess safety conditions all around the vehicle. Drivers will be able to check the positioning of tires and safety conditions under the vehicle, thanks to an under floor view.

The Land Cruiser 200 is offered with a single engine option in Japan, a 4.6-liter V8 gasoline unit producing 318PS (314hp) at 5,600 rpm and 460Nm (339lb-ft) of torque at 3,400 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission which sends power to all four-wheels. Average fuel economy according to Japan’s JC08 cycle is 6.9 km/L (14.5 l/100 km or 16.2 mpg US).

In other markets, the Land Cruiser 200 will also be offered with a revised twin-turbo 4.5-liter diesel engine which has gained new injectors, revised mapping and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Thanks to these updates, the engine now produces 268hp (272PS), an increase of 7hp or 2.5 percent, while peak torque remains 650Nm (479lb-ft). Fuel economy is improved by around 8 percent to 9.5 l/100 km (24.7 mpg US).

Prices start from 4,728,437 yen (approximately $38,000), with Toyota targeting monthly sales of 250 units in Japan.
