The VW Phaeton is probably the ultimate understated luxury sedan.
What else could we call a vehicle that boasts the same underpinnings and craftsmanship as the Bentley Continental as well as the depressing styling of the contemporary VW Passat?
Don’t laugh, because the Phaeton’s appeal resides precisely in its unremarkable styling. No average Joe on the street will ever realize you’re driving a luxury sedan and even those who know a thing or two about cars will think that you are driving a rather big Passat.
The folks from Regular Car Reviews recently drove a 2004 VW Phaeton V8 and had only nice things to say about it, if you can count as positive the following statement: “The Phaeton is the nicest car never to turn a single head.”
