This cool looking concept-car could be yours for a reasonable price.
As you can see, the whole rig is based on Ford’s redesigned 2002 Explorer SUV. Granted, it’s not one of those striking, futuristic concepts that are completely unusable in the real world, but that actually makes it a cool buy. A functional design study which can be used daily? Count me in.
Ford realized that a good portion of its SUV clients never actually had the intention of “exploring” anything else than the city, so the American car manufacturer came up with the Urban Explorer Concept (a very suggestive name).
The concept was – in its prime – an acknowledgment that the modern SUV owner needs a multi-functional mode of transportation that can meet diverse requirements for passenger carrying and occasional cargo hauling.
The Urban Concept comes with a revised body kit, integrated driving lamps, a roof spoiler and fender flares which house the deep-dish five-spoke 20 inch rims. In fact, the whole ensemble was custom made and modified to appeal to a more modern audience.
Performance wise, the car doesn’t shine. Yes, it comes equipped with brake cooling ducts, center dual exhaust and a lowered suspension, but it also comes with an enormous 4.0-litre SOHC V6, which develops only 205 hp. However, it’s not always about the “go”.
The car will go under the Hammer at RM Sotheby’s “Motor City” auction and it’s currently estimated at $20,000 – $30,000. The great thing is that the concept is offered without reserve and that means it can be bought for less than that if there are not so many bidders interested in it.
As I see it, there are some good news and some bad news for the potential buyer. The good news is that somebody could end up with a genuine Ford concept car for an estimated $30,000. The bad news is that somebody could end up with an old Ford Explorer for $30,000.
