We spotted Porsche taking a virtually undisguised 991.2-generation 911 out for a few quick laps around the Nürburgring.
Apparently, Porsche is done hiding it’s facelifted 911 with one exception; the tail lamps that continue to be covered behind fake graphics (you’ll have to look at our close-up photo to tell), but other than that, this is it folks.
While we wouldn’t be surprised if Porsche announced sheet-metal tweaks that are invisible to the naked untrained eye, what we see here is a subtle makeover.
Visible changes includes new headlamp units, thinner LED daytime running lights positioned on a redesigned front bumper, different door handles, restyled rear bumper with central-mounted pipes (at least on this model), and a more retro treatment for the engine vent cover with vertical slats.
You can’t see it in these shots, but our spies have nabbed a 2016MY tester’s interior revealing a newly styled steering wheel, a larger touchscreen for the PCM infotainment system and new switchgear on the center console.
If you’re thinking that’s not much of a facelift, that’s probably because you haven’t heard the talk about Porsche switching to new turbocharged flat-six engines for its base models. While no official details are out yet, it’s believed that the 991.2 will debut a 2.7-liter unit with around 370PS (365hp) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) for the Carrera, and a 3.0-liter mill producing about 420PS (414hp) and 510Nm (376 lb-ft) in the Carrera S.
Porsche is said to use turbocharged engines for the entire line of 911s sans the hardcore GT models like the GT3 and GT3 RS, which will continue to breathe freely – for now, at least.
The updated 911 will break cover at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
