While there have been attempts to combine driving game mechanics with elements from the familiar sport of football / soccer arguably none beg you to play them as much as Rocket League does.
It’s a new title that blends cute RC car driving (similar to the now classic ReVolt) with being in a team (of either bots or real people) and trying to push a ball around to score goals. It’s not the idea itself that’s particularly special here, but rather the stunning execution that makes this title remarkable.
The work of developer Psyonix, Rocket League looks cartoony yet sharp in a next-gen kind of way, with all manner of lighting and particle effects to keep your retina entertained all throughout. The ball is oversized and the cars are granted boost and jump abilities which have to be timed perfectly with throttle and steering in order to pass, cross or shoot on goal.
The game released earlier this month for PC and PlayStation4 and you can download it on Steam for €20 – there its ratings are ‘overwhelmingly positive’…
