BMW has finally revealed the new 8-Series, with the company calling it “an unrivaled combination of inspiring sportiness and contemporary luxury”. It’s been a really long time since BMW has challenged Mercedes in the upper premium segments with a two-door model but here we are and, what do you know, there’s a Lexus here too.

Now, before some of you start arguing that the Lexus LC isn’t exactly a direct rival to the 8-Series and the S-Class Coupe, real customers looking to spend $100k are more than likely to cross-shop between these models, regardless of what you think.

Yes, the Germans might offer more interior space than the Lexus, but in the world of two-door luxury grand tourers, the comfort of the rear passengers isn’t a priority. What matters is an eye-catching design, feel-good factor and a balance between thrilling dynamics and superb comfort over long distances.

The new BMW 8-Series backs its sporty character with a muscular styling that retains a lot of features from the concept that previewed it.

The wide kidney grille is paired nicely with slim headlights –the slimmest of any BMW– while the heavily raked rear window leads to a rear end dominated by the extended taillights and the two rather large trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes.

Next to it, the Mercedes S-Class Coupe looks almost sedated but aggressiveness was never in the menu of the big two-door Merc.

Instead, the bodywork’s lines are far more elegant and clean, aiming to give the S-Class Coupe an imposing, yet understated and overall, handsome image that exudes class. It looks expensive and beautiful at the same time.

Then we have the Lexus LC; the design brief of the Japanese coupe here ticks every box a big sports car should, featuring a wide footprint, a low roof line and futuristic details at key areas.

The busy lights all around somehow work with the rest of the bodywork while the characteristic Lexus spindle grille blends in way that its four-door siblings can’t match. It’s a striking luxury GT with the presence of a supercar.

All three of them continue to impress once you step inside. The BMW welcomes you with the company’s fresh-out-of-the-oven pair of displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, steel mesh detailing and glass applications on selected surfaces and controls, as well as a full leather interior.

The Mercedes S-Class Coupe attacks you with two huge displays integrated on a beautifully shaped dashboard trimmed in genuine materials like wood, metal, carbon fiber and, of course, acres of leather.

Open the door of the Lexus LC and you’re greeted with one of the most special interiors in the market, with complex surfaces blending with modern tech and a mix of leather and Alcantara. This is arguably the interior with the bigger wow-factor if you choose a lighter color combo and not just black.
