Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz was said to be planning an all-new entry level front-wheel-drive sports coupe to rival the Audi TT. Sources claim Mercedes will source the platform from the next-generation A-Class for its new model.
Details regarding the new Mercedes-Benz small coupe are limited but if it is to compete against the fashionable Audi as well as the muscular BMW 2-series, we expect the mini Merc to feature a svelte design inspired by the company’s bigger coupes, including the Mercedes AMG GT pictured above and below.
In order to be a true Audi TT rival, sources told Autocar magazine that Mercedes-Benz is also mulling over a roadster variant of the entry-level coupe. However, this position has been filled by the long-standing SLK, which has raised questions concerning the SLK’s fate. That said, officials within Mercedes say there are no plans to kill the SLK at this point.
Finally, we arrive to the possible engine options for the future entry Mercedes coupe: a range of updated 4-cylinder gas, diesel, and hybrid power units are expected for the Mercedes Audi TT fighter. However, we are mostly excited about the turbocharged 2.0 liter engine by AMG. The range topping entry AMG coupe could receive a 400 bhp motor mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to all four wheels. If the AWD Mercedes AMG coupe comes to realization, then expect the latest Mercedes pocket rocket to launch from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in less than 4.5 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 155 mph.
The Mercedes entry-level coupe could arrive in 2019. Stay tuned as we learn more about the rumored Mercedes-Benz entry level Audi TT rival.
