According to a recent report, the BMW-co-developed Toyota Supra will hit the market in 2018. It says that it’s actually going to be more BMW than Toyota, as most of the mechanical bits like the chassis and engine will come out of Bavaria.
Toyota is only said to be providing the monetary means to make the new Supra happen, and in exchange for BMW’s help, it’s reportedly sharing some of its vast knowledge of hybrids and electrification.
And this does make sense, as Toyota had absolutely no trouble in having another manufacturer develop most of its GT86, in that case it was Subaru. Moreover, Toyota doesn’t have a straight-six engine in production any more, and it probably lacks a bespoke sporty chassis of the size required for the next Supra.
As for the way it looks, everybody is saying it will be inspired by the FT-1 concept (pictured), which is a valid guess, but that looks contemporary now, so they’ll have to change it a bit to feel modern in three years’ time when it’s said to debut.
