Porsche’s world debut at the New York Auto Show is the Boxster Spyder, the fastest and most powerful Boxster ever made.
Basically a drop-top version of the Cayman GT4, the Porsche Boxster Spyder is powered by a slightly detuned version of the 3.8-liter flat-six found in the former model. In the Boxster, the engine produces 375PS (370hp), 10hp less than in the Cayman GT4 which has 385PS (380hp).
In doing so, Porsche made sure the Boxster Spyder wasn’t faster than the more expensive Cayman GT4, but with a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 290km/h (180mph), the Spyder isn’t what we’d call a slow car. It’s only marginally slower than the Cayman GT4, which sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 295 km/h (183 mph).
Besides the engine, the Boxster Spyder also features a similar aerodynamic package, which helps distinguish it from lesser Boxsters – as do the Porsche 718 Spyder-inspired streamlined bulges that extend down along the long rear lid behind the headrests.
