This uncanny sense of déjà vu from Scion continues with their new iM compact hatchback revealed on the eve of the New York Auto Show.
Whereas the Scion iA small sedan is a Mazda2 with a gaping grille face, the iM is a kitted-out, North American version of Europe’s VW Golf-rivaling Toyota Auris.
As expected, the production version of last year’s iM Concept dropped the dramatic body parts for a more conservative look that differs from the Auris only in details such as the revised front and rear bumpers, aprons, the infotainment system, air-condition controls and the automatic gearbox lever.
The iM will arrive in US dealerships this fall with a starting price of $20,000 and a standard 137hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline unit paired to a six-speed manual, or optionally, a Continuously Variable Transmission with a Sport mode, with Scion estimating a 37-MPG highway fuel economy rating.
Standard equipment will include 17-inch alloy wheels and eight airbags, while Scion will offer a score of dealer-installed accessories such as navigation upgrade kit, body graphics, cargo area enhancements and cabin light kit.
