Gearing up for the 2015 F1 Malaysian Grand Prix this weekend is none other than McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso, cleared to race after the crash he suffered while testing the car in Barcelona.

There has been a lot of speculation about what actually caused Alonso’s crash and if he had indeed blacked out after the impact, but speaking to the press in Sepang, the Spaniard made sure to clear everything up.

Regarding what caused his crash, he said that “We had a steering problem in the middle of Turn 3. It locked to the right, I approached the wall, I braked at the last moment, I downshifted from fifth to third.” And of course, the rest is history.

The good news is that McLaren have since then added new sensors to better detect what Fernando also called “heavy steering”.

He also dismissed allegations claiming that when he came around, he thought it was 1995 and that he was speaking Italian, by saying that he remembers everything from that day.

“It was a sunny morning, [I remember] all the set-up changes, all the lap times. [Sebastian] Vettel was in front of me before Turn 3 but cut the chicane to let me go. After the hit, I was kissing the wall for a while, then I switched off the radio first because it was on, then I switched off the master switch. I was perfectly conscious at that time.”

He did admit to losing consciousness either in the ambulance or in the clinic at the track because of the medication he was administered.

Although we’re not sure what exactly he might have been given that would cause him to black out, especially since EMTs won’t give you a heavy dose of narcotics unless you’re in a lot of pain – which is something Fernando never actually mentioned.
