After producing 5 million EcoBoost-equipped vehicles world wide, Ford has sprung yet another impressive statistic on us, one that we didn’t exactly see coming.

In Europe, more than 1 in 4 vehicles sold in 2014 were using EcoBoost engines. Yes, read that again. More than 1 in 4.

The most popular has been the 1.0 liter EcoBoost or as some call it, the “little engine that could”, which was also named International Engine of the Year three times in a row.

This just goes to show how far economy-driven petrol engines have come in the past couple of years, especially in Europe where in 2014 the Ford Fiesta was the best sold car in the subcompact segment while the Focus was the 2nd best sold car in its class, with 222,297 units sold last year.

In total, more than 230,000 1.0 liter EcoBoost-equipped Fords were sold and there’s no reason why there should be any drop off in 2015, especially since the Focus facelift is still fresh and the all-new Mondeo is out.

As Ford Europe VP Joe Bakaj puts it, “Ford EcoBoost delivers great performance with lower fuel bills, a recipe which is proving incredibly popular with consumers in Europe and around the world. EcoBoost engines have proved a game‑changing technology that are attracting new customers to the Ford brand every day.”

That hits the nail on the head right there. The part about attracting new customers. That’s exactly what’s been happening in 2014 and what Ford is counting on this year as well.

As people keep hearing about this small 3-cylinder engine which at its worst still offers decent performance and excellent fuel economy at a very good price, they’ll start to gravitate towards Ford dealerships more and more.
